Estava uma mãe muito afflicta, sentada ao pé do berço do seu filho, com medo que lhe morresse. A creancinha pallida tinha os olhos fechados. Respírava com difficuldade, e ás vezes tão profundamente, que parecia gemer; mas a mãe causava ainda mais lastima do que o pequenino moribundo.
