Le jour tombait dans le vaste atelier par la baie ouverte du plafond. C'était un grand carré de lumière éclatante et bleue, un trou clair sur un infini lointain d'azur, où passaient, rapides, des vols d'oiseaux.
Mais à peine entrée dans la haute pièce sévère et drapée, la clarté joyeuse du ciel s'atténuait, devenait douce, s'endormait sur les étoffes, allait mourir dans les portières, éclairait à peine les coins sombres où, seuls, les cadres d'or s'allumaient comme des feux.
