Un de mes amis m'avait dit: Si tu passes par hasard aux environs de Bordj-Ebbaba, pendant ton voyage en Algérie, va donc voir mon ancien camarade Auballe, qui est colon là-bas.
J'avais oublié le nom d'Auballe et le nom d'Ebbaba et je ne songeais guère à ce colon, quand j'arrivai chez lui, par pur hasard. Depuis un mois je rôdais à pied par toute cette région magnifique qui s'étend d'Alger à Cherchell, Orléansville et Tiaret. Elle est en même temps boisée et nue, grande et intime. On rencontre, entre deux monts, des forêts de pins profondes en des vallées étroites où roulent des torrents en hiver. Des arbres énormes tombés sur le ravin servent de pont
