Books Becoming Movies or Television Shows in 2024 (Part One)

Hollywood has never been shy about adapting successful books into blockbuster movies, but with the rise of streaming services, the demand for these adaptations has also increased. The past few years have seen plenty of novels get turned into hit movies or television shows, and this trend is set to continue in 2024. Some adaptations are just around the corner, while others may or may not make the cut. For readers who are also movie buffs, here are the books that are becoming movies or television shows in 2024. 

The Tiger’s Apprentice

The Tiger’s Apprentice is the first book in the middle-grade fantasy adventure series of the same name by Laurence Yet. The story sees a young boy named Tom Lee meet a talking tiger named Mr. Hu and discover that he has magical powers. With these powers comes a great responsibility that sees Tom joining up with Mr. Hu and a ragtag band of other creatures whose mission is to keep an ancient talisman away from an evil enemy. The Tiger’s Apprentice is set to release on Paramount+ as an animated fantasy film in February of 2024. 

The Expatriates

The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee is the story of three women whose lives collide in the glittering city of Hong Kong. One of them, Mercy, is a young Korean American trying to start her life anew. The other, Margaret, was once the other of three, but a catastrophic event has left her trying to negotiate an existence that has become utterly unrecognizable. Finally, there’s Hillary, a wealthy housewife trying to save her uncertain marriage while struggling to have a child. These women form a profound connection while faced with unthinkable choices. The Expatriates is set to release as a major Amazon Prime series called Expats, starring Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue and Ji-Young Yoo. 

Argylle

Argyle is a globe-trotting spy thriller by Elly Conway that sees the world teetering on the brink of chaos. The CIA’s most legendary spymaster, Frances Coffey, might be the only one who can put a stop to it, but doing so means enlisting a man named Argyle. He is a man with a dark past whose life came crashing to a halt as a teenager, but Coffey knows he might have what it takes to go up against one of the most powerful men in the world. For Argyle, it means a crash course in espionage that will take him on a deathly rollercoaster that could make or break him. Argyle is set to be released in February 2024 as a new Matthew Vaughn film staring Henry Cavill in the titular role. 

Force of Nature

Force of Nature is the second book in the Aaron Falk series by Jane Harper. It is the story of five office colleagues who reluctantly pick up their backpacks and go on a hike through rugged landscapes in the name of team building. Unfortunately, only four women make it out to the other side of the muddy track as one of them, Alice Russell, goes missing. Federal Police Agent Aaron Folk takes an interest in the whereabouts of Alice as she is a whistleblower in his latest case. Unfortunately, it seems that Alice knew a few too secrets about the company she worked for and her co-workers. The first book in the series, The Dry, received a movie adaptation in 2020, starring Eric Bana in the role of Aaron Falk. The sequel, Force of Nature: The Dry 2, will be released in February of 2024, with Eric Bana reprising his role. 

Orion and the Dark

Orion and the Dark by Emma Yarlett is a children’s book about a shy, unassuming, elementary school student named Orion. While Orion is scared of a lot of things his biggest fear is the dark. This causes the dark to take Orion on an incredible adventure around the world to show him that there is nothing to be afraid of in the night. Dreamworks animation is released a film based on the book on Netflix in February, 2024 with Jacob Tremblay voicing Orion and Paul Walter Hauser voicing the dark.

The Three-Body Problem

The Three-Body Problem is a science fiction novel by Cixin Liu about a secret military project to send signals into space. The goal is to establish contact with aliens, but when an alien civilization receives the signal, they plan on following it to invade Earth. When the people of Earth find out about this, they split into different factions, with some planning to fight against the invasion while others plan on helping the aliens take over the world. The book already received a Chinese television adaption in 2023, but will also receive a new Netflix series in March of 2024.
