Books Becoming Movies or Television Shows in 2024 (Part Two)

In addition to The Expatriates, Argyle, Fore of Nature, and the other books mentioned in the first part of this article, there are plenty of other film and television show adaptations to look forward to in 2024. Here are a few more books that readers can catch up on before these adaptations hit the big and small screens this year.

Spaceman of Bohemia by Jaroslav Kalfar is set in the near-distant future and features a Czech astronaut named Jakub on a suicide mission. His task is to investigate a mysterious dust cloud that is covering Venus. No other country is willing to risk sending a citizen on the mission, making Jakub a world celebrity. Unfortunately, over the course of the mission, his marriage starts to fail, and eventually, Jakub's sanity also comes into question. Spaceman of Bohemia is receiving a feature film adaptation by Netflix titled Spaceman, which will star Adam Sandler in the lead role. The movie is scheduled for release on March 1, 2024.

Mickey7 by Edward Ashton is a science fiction story about a disposable employee sent to the ice world of Niflheim as part of a colony mission. Mickey7 is an "Expendable," which means the crew turns to him whenever a mission is too dangerous for them to do. After all, if Mickey dies, he can regenerate with a new body that has most of his memories intact. Mickey signed on for the mission only to escape from his bad debts and the boredom of Midgard, but after six deaths, he understands why nobody else signed up for the position. Mickey7 is receiving a film adaptation titled Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattison in the lead role. It is directed by Bong Joon-ho and is scheduled for release on March 29, 2024. 

The Watchers

The Watchers by A.M. Shine

The Watcher is a Gothic horror novel by A.M. Shine set in Ireland's remote and sinister forests. The protagonist, Mina, finds her car breaking down at the treeline of a forest that isn't charted on any map. As she entered the dark woodland, she encountered a shouting woman urging her to run into a concrete bunker. After doing so, Mina finds herself trapped with strangers held captive by creatures called Watchers, who emerge at night to watch the humans. The Watcher is receiving a feature film adaptation directed by M. Night Shyamalan's daughter, Ishana, and will star Dakota Fanning in the role of Mina. The Watchers is scheduled for release in movie theaters on June 7, 2024. 

Cold Storage

Cold Storage is a science fiction novel by David Koepp, the screenwriter of Jurassic Park. The story follows Roberto Diaz, a Petagon bioterror operative who finds himself with one night to save humanity. The threat comes from a highly mutative organism capable of extinction-level destruction. After being left forgotten underground in a sub-basement for decades, it has found a way out, and it is up to Roberto and two unwitting security guards to quarantine this horror. Filming for a movie adaptation starring Liam Neeson and Joe Kerry started in March of 2023, with the release expected sometime in 2024. 

Lady in the Lake

However, after almost twenty years of marriage, Maddie leaves her husband with the intention of making good on her youthful ambitions to live a passionate, meaningful life. Her desire to leave her mark on the world leads her to work at the city's afternoon newspaper, the Star. There, she uncovers a story that could help her make her name: the murder of a young black woman named Cleo Sherwood. Lady in the Lake is receiving an American limited series starring Natalie Portman that will premiere on Apple TV+.

The Electric State by Simon Stålenhag is set in late alternate reality 1997 and features a runaway teenager traveling through a strange American landscape with her small yellow toy robot. Along with gigantic battle drones, the countryside is littered with the discarded trash of the virtual–reality addicted society. However, as the girl approaches the continent's edge while searching for her missing brother, the world around them appears to unravel at an even faster pace. The Electric State is receiving a film adaptation directed by the Russo brothers of Stranger Things fame, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, and other big names. The movie is scheduled to release on Netflix in 2024. 

It Ends With Us

It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover is the tale of Lily and Ryle. Lily worked hard to graduate college, move to Boston, and start her own business after growing up in a small town. Ryle is a neurosurgeon with a complete aversion to relationships. However, he has a soft spot for Lily, and she becomes the exception to his "no dating" rule. However, while Lily is happy with her new relationship, she can't help but wonder what has made Ryle the way he is. However, their relationship is threatened by the appearance of Lily's first love, who is also a link to the past she left behind. It Ends With Us is receiving a film adaptation with Blake Lively starring as Lily and Justin Baldoni in the role of Ryle. The film is scheduled to release on February 9, 2024.
